Shards

Layers upon layers
Skillfully, carefully, carelessly
We build ourselves.
Experiences, emotions, that one look
Sometimes shape us in our entirety.

Years go by, moments slip away
Unreliable memories form stories
Your, mine, ours.
Same moment crafted into a mosaic
Of perspectives, truths, and lies.

There are truths that have witnesses
And truths that exist in spaces that don’t exist.
Did you see the cactus with shards on it?
And the balls of fire that rained down last night?

Did you also feel my love hanging in the air
Untouched, as words of conflicts cut
Trust, and innocence that was stored so carefully
From a childhood long ago?

It is the festival of lights.
Tear dropped, almond shaped flames burn.
My palms hold them so carefully.
There are no children here now.

Just people.
Layers upon layers.
Shards, love, light.
All existing together in a house. A family.
