Dying dream

image

In the cold evening
I wake with a jolt
Feel my desperate heart
Beating in my throat.

In the faint light
That escapes the door
I read the time on the clock
That says, I’d slept for hours four.

My skin is covered in a sheen of sweat.
My hair, a crazy mess.
My limbs lie useless by my side.
The sheets twist around my legs.

In panic, I lift my hand
And place it above my heart
Feel it beating beautifully
Even though it is broken into many parts.

I remember the dream
Still feel it on my body
I’ve seen deaths of everyone
But this time, it wasn’t just anybody.

I saw myself so clearly
Skin, pale and grey
My lips curled in pain
The hands of my loved ones, folded in pray.

My hair still shone
My nails, still the same
Many stretched their hands
To touch me, but in vain.

My body lies on the floor
Everyone is crying
They sing praises of me
Wishing, I was not dying.

I don’t look at anyone else
In that dreaded dream
But myself
I can feel the tears that escape my eyes in a stream.

I look at my body
Feel the loss and dread
Words and thoughts I never shared,
Fears I never conquered because I was afraid.

In the darkness of the room
I lose myself a little
Breathe in out in out
Feeling weak and brittle

I pull a white pillow
To my chest
Wrap my entire body around it
Pressing it firmly against my breast.

A solitary tear that escapes my eye
Is absorbed by the pillow,
Which lies limp in my arms;
My dear little lifeless fellow

Alone, I lie in the dark
Thinking of the good in life
That was just a bad dream
I hope this thing I’ll realise.

  1. “That says I’d slept for hours four”
I love it when people use this literary device (I’ve already forgotten its name) and it turns out well.
This piece manages to pull the reader along for the experience. Nice
